ASME Experts Helping Companies Large And Small
08/01/18
The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) is an internationally recognised standard for the design, manufacture, inspection and testing of all kinds of pressure vessels. Inside of North America, the ASME Code is generally required for many types of pressure vessels and equipment. Outside North America, the ASME Code is recognised as a leading global standard. In order for a manufacturer to be able to apply the ASME stamp to a piece of equipment, it has to be approved by ASME to perform the work. This is done along with an Authorised Inspection Agency. Click here to learn more about this process. ASME Code symbol stamps are applied to item nameplates by ASME approved manufacturers. ASME Data Reports are generated to identify that an approved manufacturer has carried out the work. An Authorised Inspector carries out inspection during the manufacturing process and countersigns these Data Reports. Lloyd’s Register is a globally recognized ASME Authorised Inspection Agency. Outside of North America, we are the leading provider of ASME code services. We provide accreditation services* to all parts of the ASME BPVC including Sections I, III, Divisions 1,2 & 3, IV, VIII Divisions 1, 2 & 3, X, XI, and XII.
ASME Offers All-Expenses-Paid Oil and Gas Career Tour
08/01/18
Attention mechanical engineering students: a unit of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) wants to inform you about career options in the oil and gas industry and pay for the privilege of doing so. Each year, ASME’s Petroleum Division (PD) invites two groups of 20 to 40 mechanical engineering students from universities throughout North America to participate in its Collegiate Council (CC) program. Each CC member – selected based on an online application, a personal essay and a faculty advisor’s recommendation – travels to two intensive, 3 ½-day working meetings in a city with a strong oil and gas industry presence. PD sponsors the meetings to build awareness of oil and gas career opportunities for mechanical engineers. The crash courses in the oil and gas industry include facility tours, presentations, a group project, one-on-one meetings with industry pros and networking opportunities. Dena Demboski, Houston-based vice president of drilling and completions with UpCurve Energy and a PD volunteer who helps to run CC, describes the program as a “fully funded opportunity to bridge the gap between school and the oil and gas industry.” “Students gain exposure to some of the newest technology and learn about types of jobs within the different oil and gas divisions – upstream, downstream and midstream – and gain insight on various career paths for engineers that help them make more educated decisions about job selection after school,” said Demboski. “In addition they have opportunities to network with other engineers in industry and students wanting to get involved with industry, ask questions and make life-long contacts that could help lead them to their next job.” Another Houston-based CC volunteer, retired subsea engineer Don Wells, said practicality is a hallmark of the program. “It’s a real introduction to the opportunities provided in the petroleum industry,” said Wells, whose nearly four-decade career included positions with ConocoPhillips and Hess Corp.

New Bucket Technology Could Slash Offshore Wind Costs
08/01/18
Siemens Gamesa is working with Universal Foundation to test an offshore wind foundation suction bucket concept that could cut installation costs by 40 percent. The consortium including Siemens Gamesa, Universal Foundation, Aalborg University, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier and Offshoreenergy.dk has been awarded $4.4 million by the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme via the Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate. The partnership aims to complete an offshore trial installation after having built and eight meter by eight meter prototype. The new concept merges the noise free installation advantages of suction buckets with industrialized fabrication methods using coil steel instead of classical plate steel. The fabrication method was originally developed between Siemens Gamesa and the Danish steel specialist Ib Andresen Industries for application in onshore towers. “By applying this innovative fabrication method to suction bucket technology in offshore wind, the steel plate thickness can be reduced to below 20mm, compared to today’s typical thickness of 30-40mm for this type of foundation, said Finn Daugaard Madsen, Project Manager, SiemensGamesa. “This means use of lower costs steel with higher supply availability. The assembly process is much more suitable for high volume manufacturing, and hence supply bottlenecks can be eliminated and costs reduced. A key element is to ensure the structural integrity of the foundation both during installation and operation.” The aim is to mature the concept towards full commercial scale. In March this year, Universal Foundation and Hitachi Zosen teamed up to push competitive offshore wind in Japan. The cooperation is focused on a feasibility study to assess the application of bucket technology for a Japanese offshore wind power generation project. Hitachi Zosen is executing the works in partnership with Kyoto University (comprising of Kyoto City, Kyoto University, Kyoto University) and Toyo Construction. The decision to engage Universal Foundation in the feasibility study was based on a comparative assessment of various foundation types for a wind farm of 15 wind turbines.

Welding Prep In Pressure Vessel Fabrication
February 15, 2016
This article written by Tony Hufford for The Fabricator was published on October 28, 2015. Information is provided on 3 simple welding preparation techniques that can eliminate rework costs which can be very high. Fabrication of pressure vessels can involve several feet of welds and, as a result, a lot of surface preparation work. Good weld prep and welding technique are critical to achieving profitable projects and repeat customers. Good cleaning procedures results in good weld reliability. If a weld fails to meet the requirements of a nondestructive test, costs escalate. The weld must be removed, and the area must be appropriately patched. This is an expensive process that can cause a project to miss its expected outcomes for cost and deadline.

HSB Honored by ASME for Creation, Adoption, Support and Enforcement Support of National Pressure Vessel Code
Hartford, Connecticut, June 2, 2014
The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB), founded in 1866, was recently honored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), founded in 1880, for their contribution to the development of pressure vessel and boiler safety standards. The company was founded in Hartford Connecticut based on the idea that combining insurance with boiler inspections would contribute to the safe and reliable operation of pressure vessels, boilers and steam drums. HSB was one of the first companies in the United States to understand and address the destructive potential of boilers and pressure vessels. The largest provider of equipment breakdown insurance and related inspection services in North America was an original contributor to the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code. ” “The first company in America devoted primarily to industrial safety” was recognized by the ASME for their role in the creation, adoption, support and enforcement of the National Pressure Vessel Code. HSB has been credited with preventing many fatal and dangerous accidents involving steam drum, fire-tube boiler, water-tube boiler and pressure vessel explosions over the past 100 years, when the code was first issued (1914) and published. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) provides pressure vessel manufacturers and fabricators like The Halvorsen Company of Cleveland, Ohio with a standard set of guidelines for the design, manufacture, fabrication and inspection of pressure vessels. The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB) specifications for boiler and pressure vessel design, manufacture, and maintenance became widely accepted as the “Hartford Standards.” HSB was one of the first specialty insurers to combine pressure vessel inspections with insurance contracts to manufacturers and operators of boilers and pressure vessels. Pressure vessels were invented during the industrial revolution, a significant time in history, and were called boilers, which produced steam which powered one of the most important machines used in the 1800s. The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB) is The Halvorsen Company’s Authorized Inspection Agency (AIA) for ASME code fabrications.

Acoustic Emission Examination of Metal Pressure Vessels
Acoustic emission (AE) is a meticulous nondestructive examination (NDE) method that exposes deficient areas in pressure vessel integrity. It is the only NDE method capable of assessing volumetric integrity during a vessel pressure test period. When AE is used as a primary examination method during hydrostatic testing, it supports all other NDE methods.
Finite Element Analysis of Pressure Vessels
The use of finite element methods to design and analyze pressure vessels is a relatively recent development in the overall historical perspective of the ASME Code. The finite element method first became a useful tool for the designer in the early 1960s. The advent of the ASME Nuclear Code, Section III, which first appeared in about 1964, provided for a “design by analysis” procedure. Up until this time, the pressure vessel design codes all used the “design by formula” approach, which is essentially that now used in Section VIII, Division 1 of the ASME Code. The design by formula method provides explicit rules for calculating wall thicknesses of heads, shells, reinforcement around openings, and other details of a vessel.
Identifying Pressure Vessel Nozzle Problems From the Cracking Pattern
Pressure vessels of “thin” shell construction that are fabricated from 1/2” thick or less steel plate material are routinely used in the power generation, chemical, petroleum, and food processing industries. Some of these vessels are subjected to relatively severe operating conditions that include chemical attack, rapid pressure and temperature fluctuations, and steam/water hammer. As a consequence, many owners or operators perform scheduled nondestructive testing of the units to determine a vessel’s mechanical integrity.
Polymer Use for Boilers and Pressure Vessels
Polymers (plastics) have advantages over metals in the construction of vessels.
Pressure Vessels: Analyzing Change
Vessel owners routinely expand and revise their plant layouts or change vessel content and production levels in order to adjust to changing market conditions. While controls exist in the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) for the repair and alteration of pressure vessels, there is less industry recognition regarding changes in vessel location, service conditions, or contents where there is no physical change to the vessel itself.
Repair or Alteration of Pressure Vessels
This article identifies some of the special requirements applicable to the repair or alteration of pressure vessels fabricated of quenched and tempered (UHT) materials and, in particular, the additional rules that should be utilized when repairs or alterations are made to these items.
